The Senior Director, Compound Development Team Leader (CDTL) Neurodegeneration Early Development is accountable for the development, implementation, and management of high-value strategies for selected drug development projects, particularly during the critical steps from drug discovery to clinical Proof of Concept (PoC) phase. The CDTL ensures projects are delivered in a timely and cost-effective manner to meet or exceed program objectives.

This role leads the Compound Development Team and oversees the operational implementation of compound strategies through effective cross-functional team leadership. The position ensures alignment between preclinical and clinical phases, focusing on precision medicine and biomarker strategies, and interacts with key stakeholders (including discovery, biomarkers, data science and translation teams) and governance committees.

This highly strategic position requires excellence in team leadership via influencing skills and matrix interactions.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Develop and implement decision-strategies and project plans focusing on the Translational Medicine component and early phase strategy of drug development, ensuring efficient progression to clinical PoC.

  • Act as a senior representative to Health Authorities and external medical/scientific communities, enhancing communication and fostering collaboration with key opinion leaders and clinical centers.

  • Provide strategy expertise across various disease areas, contributing to target selection, validation, and the preclinical development of compounds including precision approaches.

  • Lead the Compound Development Team (CDT), ensuring close cooperation with discovery, clinical, DMPK, biomarkers, data science, and translation teams.

  • Manage cross-functional team execution, negotiating deliverables with function heads, identifying critical risks and opportunities, and leading contingency planning.

  • Mentor and guide CDT members, setting objectives, and providing input for performance evaluations.

  • Prepare and implement training programs for project teams and contribute to senior management discussions and decisions.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Actively contribute to and lead the development of compound strategy and decision making, in partnership with TA leadership, by providing relevant research, analysis, and expertise

  • Lead problem-solving within the CDT, therapeutic area, and governance committees, effectively communicating strategies and plans. Provides decision-making tools and techniques to the CDT.

  • Leads the communication of strategy and plans to the TA & governance committees, development partners, and other key stakeholders.

  • Identifies critical risks and assumptions and transparently communicate them to the CDT, functions, TA & governance committees, and senior management.

  • Leads the development and maintenance of the project plan including timelines and quality standards.

  • Accountable for the overall budget and financial management of the compound or program.

  • Manages successful cross-functional execution of the project plan through negotiating with Function heads about functional deliverables, CDT membership and goals and objectives for CDT members.

  • Aligns the CDT to achieve its goals through the networks of people/functions represented on the team.

  • Identifies issues and leads contingency planning and appropriate escalation if required.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Advanced Degree (Ph.D., M.D., M.B.A.) highly desirable

  • A minimum of ten years of pharmaceutical industry or related experience overall and/or a minimum of five to seven years of drug development or related experience with the following competencies

  • Experience in a leadership role within a multi-functional R&D organization.

  • Ability to integrate all cross functional disciplines into a successful strategy and project plan.

  • Understanding of requirements for successful commercialization of a new product

  • Expert knowledge of the drug development process and the competitive environment

  • Demonstrated influence, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills, including the ability to influence without clear reporting authority.

  • Exceptional problem-solving skills with the capacity to anticipate risks, to develop creative solutions and to meet objectives.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop deep insights (e.g., big picture thinking) based on data analysis and interpretation.

  • Results oriented, able to think creatively, critically, and proactively, to drive innovative solutions.

  • Significant work experience in a leadership position in a team matrix environment

  • Strong planning and tracking skills.

  • Demonstrated ability of strategic thinking and contingency planning with respect for Janssen Research & Development (JRD) objectives

Required Technical Knowledge and Skills:

o Fluent in written and spoken English.

o Working knowledge of the use of Microsoft suite of software products including Excel and Word

o Experience and knowledge of Good Clinical Practices and regulatory requirements for the conduct of clinical trials and for the appropriate contributions to regulatory filings.

The anticipated base pay range for this position is $187,000 to $322,000 USD.
