About the Position The Engineer works as a liaison in First Student across North America with internal lines of businesses, including Procurement, Safety, Environmental Management, Engineering and field/shop operations. Our Engineers work closely with exterior vendors on technical issues, new designs, field-internal change-over and recalls, including all major original equipment manufacturers, tier-one-two-three supply base. First Student Engineers also represent First Student and have an active role in various local, state and federal governmental affairs including active participation in various committees and sub committees of medium, heavy duty, bus related topics. Responsibilities: Tests and analyzes bus related components for stress, strain, fatigue, noise and vibration work that involves conventional engineering practice, but may include a variety of complex features such as conflicting design requirements, unsuitability of conventional materials, and difficult coordination requirements. Work requires a broad knowledge of precedents in the specialty area and a good knowledge of principles and practices of related specialties. Applies knowledge and understanding of the various operation of mechanical systems including power train, mechanical frame-super structure, body, interior, HVAC, fuel systems, chassis component and systems, steering systems, braking systems and associated noise- vibration-harshness impacts to overall vehicle safety and cost & efficiency improvement. Applies knowledge of the various operations of electrical systems including vehicle wiring, engine-transmission-body-HVAC-multiplex control modules, ampacity of circuits, lighting, dash, HVAC, chassis systems, customer convenience interfaces, 12-volt, 24 volt, 32 volt, 110 volt, 240 volt, electricity understanding and operation to overall vehicle safety and cost & efficiency improvement. Applies knowledge of various systems to observe and identify root cause of failures. Including thermal event investigation and ultimately prevention. Document and disperse information to the field accordingly. I.e. TSB or Fleet Campaign Uses appropriate tools to determine system inadequacies and opportunities for optimization. Understands system interaction and the overall effects of various components i.e. fan shroud, recirculation baffles, engine compartment airflow and cold weather devices. Understands regional requirements such as altitude and ambient temperatures and the effects these have on cooling performance. Understand correct test procedures and can conduct testing without assistance. Applies understanding of innovation skills and approaches. Takes initiative to generate new ideas within scope of responsibility. Seeks perspectives of others when solving problems or improving processes. Seeks advice when considering risks. Demonstrates willingness to consider new possibilities. Demonstrates results indicating deep knowledge of analyzing issues. Exercises trouble shooting skills for all vehicular systems for mechanical, electrical performance, drivability, and safety. Applies understanding of emissions related systems, and their overall general impact to the corporation and the environment
