Job Summary

Battelle is seeking a Senior Technical Writer to support a broad Research, Development, Test & Evaluation (RDT&E) team. The Technical Writer will be responsible for generating research documents, proposals, products, or concepts to be documented and easily understood by a broad audience. The successful applicant will develop required documentation as well as review/edit documentation developed by others. The ability to develop and maintain collaborative relationships with customers and within the team is essential.

Preferred Experience & Responsibilities

  • Attends meetings to identify additional requirements and communicates these to the respective teams for implementation.

  • Demonstrates the ability to swiftly shift priorities and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

  • Provides support to engineers, developers, and scientists.

  • Develops processes, procedures, and technical documentation.

  • Collaborates with subject matter experts (SMEs) and other stakeholders to gather technical information and develop proposals in compliance with commercial and government requirements and regulations.

  • Works with SMEs, Program Managers, and staff to assist in collection and analysis of technical concepts, technologies, and solutions to create innovative and effective proposals.

  • Creates technical narratives, diagrams, infographics, and other visual aids to effectively communicate complex technical concepts.

  • Writes, rewrites, and edits technical documentation, communication, and reference materials for research and development purposes, client deliverables, and proposals.

  • Organizes and restructures documents to meet information dissemination objectives.

  • Ensures proper use of references, secondary sources, and ancillary materials in compliance with copyright laws.

  • Advises staff on planning and organizing information, visual presentations, and graphic illustrations.

  • Provides high-quality assurance by reviewing documents for structure, coherence, logic, tone, and style, ensuring they meet customer requirements.

  • Coordinates with Project Managers and Principal Investigators to establish project schedules, requirements and plans document production cycles.

  • Oversees the creation of written material packages and liaises between the publication/proposal center staff, research group, and Communications Group.

  • May provide direction and training to less experienced staff.

Position Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Communication or in a technical field.

  • Five years of experience as a writer of technical publications, processes, instructions, and proposals; or an equivalent combination of education and or experience in a related field.

  • US citizenship is required and must have an active secret level security clearance.

  • Must have excellent grammatical and rhetorical skills and be familiar with a broad range of communication techniques and styles.

  • The ability to adapt to changing document specifications and ability to manage a multi-author/multi-reviewer publication cooperatively are vital.

  • A high level of computer literacy is required; familiarity with a variety of applications, including Microsoft products, is necessary.

  • Requires knowledge and understanding of the documentation cycle, including layout, graphic design, and web design.
