What you’ll do

We’re looking for a Manager, Robotics and Automation - Mechatronics to join the ArcBest Technologies team. The Manager, Robotics and Automation - Mechatronics leads a multi-disciplinary team of Engineers. This team focuses on robotics safety protocols, CANBUS communication, actuator controls, sensor assessments and integration, mechanical and electrical engineering design. Prioritizing effective team leadership, this role focuses on motivating and coaching a diverse workforce, as well as attracting and retaining top talent in the field of mechatronics. Collaboration with skilled Software and Hardware engineers is crucial for designing, developing, and implementing safety-critical control algorithms for our expanding fleet of Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs).

Your contribution may include:

  • Provide strategic leadership of team members while fostering a fun, motivating, and collaborative team environment.

  • Provide guidance and mentorship to team members involved in hardware design, fabrication, and testing, fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional growth.

  • Lead the design, build, and bring up of Autonomous Mobile Robot (AMR) vehicles, ensuring adherence to project timelines and budget constraints.

  • Drive research projects from start to completion, including conception, problem definition, testing hypotheses, iteration, and publication or deployment.

  • Implement and oversee functional safety measures, ensuring compliance with relevant industry standards, to mitigate risks and enhance the safety integrity of AMR hardware and control systems.

  • Spearhead the development and seamless integration of CANBUS and other communication protocols within the AMR system, optimizing data transmission efficiency and reliability between various hardware components and control units to enhance overall performance and functionality.

  • Supervise the development and integration of custom printed circuit boards (PCBs) tailored to specific AMR requirements, overseeing the design, fabrication, and testing phases to ensure optimal performance and reliability of the electronic components within the robotics system.

  • Oversee the development and implementation of hardware components, including sensors, actuators, and control systems, to optimize AMR performance and functionality.

  • Utilize strong analytical skills to understand and implement algorithms from research papers and other open-source and in-house libraries.

  • Develop and support product and technology roadmaps to align with strategic initiatives.

  • Research and stay up to date on upcoming technologies, the latest research in the space of autonomous path following, motion planning, automation, and safety systems for AMRs.

  • Participate in model creation to develop a digital twin of robots in a physics-based simulation environment.

  • Write and maintain robust, reliable, optimized, production-ready, fault-tolerant, and/or fail-safe software that meets requirements within real-world and real-time constraints using software engineering standard methodologies (e.g., meticulous code review, unit testing, etc.).

  • Participate in hands-on bring-up, prototyping, testing, and debugging of vehicle firmware.

  • Engage with external vendors to define product requirements and evaluate their solutions for feasibility with ArcBest customer requirements.

  • Design, implement, and use a data visualization, metrics, test harness, and triage system to identify, analyze, understand root cause, and evaluate performance limitations of the robots.

  • Implement software agile development and continuous integration and development of software systems.

  • Maintain a positive attitude in a highly intense, yet rewarding, environment.

  • Other duties and projects, as assigned.

As a Manager, Robotics and Automation - Mechatronics, you will be a member of the ArcBest Technologies Tech R&D Robotics team in Fort Smith, AR. Your hours will be Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm, with irregular hours that may occur depending on workload.

Education: Master’s Degree or Ph.D. in Mechanical, Mechatronics, Electrical, Aerospace, Computer Engineering, Robotics, Computer Science, or equivalent experience, preferred.

Experience: Four years’ experience in Robotics or Autonomous Vehicle hardware and software integration.

Computer Skills: Strong programming skills, preferred. Strong systems analysis and design skills, required.

Additional Requirements: Design for manufacturing and design for assembly. Strong interpersonal communication skills. Strong math (geometry, analysis, and probability). Strong physics (kinematics and dynamics), and analytical skills.
