This Opportunity

We are currently looking to fill one Full Time Barrier Free Design Counsellor, Accessibility Services in London, Ontario.

Roles and responsibilities

The Barrier Free Design Counsellor (BFDC) is part of the larger Accessibility Services team. They are responsible for ensuring all documents and eligibility criteria are validated in order to issue funding with the ultimate goal of creating an accessible, barrier-free living space where people with disabilities can completebasic activities of daily living or get in and out of their homes safely, independently and with dignity. The BFDC will follow the request through to completion and ensure payment is issued to the selected vendor orcontractor.

  • Using a client-focused attitude, respond to program inquiries and information received via phone, email, fax and mail

  • Help clients, caregivers, healthcare professionals and all stakeholders navigate service and provide referrals as appropriate

  • Review applications and supporting documents against eligibility and program metrics

  • Maintain a caseload that is compliant with departmental policies and procedures

  • Process applications into the client database

  • Complete follow up for required documentation, as needed

  • Send out correspondence regarding file outcomes and decisions

  • Operationalize MODC strategic goals and objectives

  • Collaboratively work with internal and external stakeholders in administering funding of modifications, adaptations and devices

  • Ensuring monthly service and spending targets are met

  • Maintains current knowledge of accessibility industry including barrier-free modifications, adaptations and devices

  • Submit invoices for payment using MODC database

  • Follow up with stakeholders regarding quality of service and issue satisfaction survey

Qualifications and experience

  • Education: The successful candidate will have a post-secondary degree or previous experience in social services field, health, a design field, or universal design/barrier-free design. Familiarity with universal design concepts, Provincial Building Code and CSA Accessibility standards for the built environment will be considered an asset

  • Grant Administration: Experience with managing a caseload, working within set deadlines and ensuring monthly service and spending targets are met.

  • Effective Communication: The successful candidate must be able to listen actively, explain complex information clearly, and maintain open lines of communication in both verbal and written communication. Fluency in French will be considered an asset.

  • Time Management and Organization. The successful candidate must be able to support multiple clients and perform many tasks simultaneously. Strong organizational skills are essential for prioritizingand managing caseload effectively

  • Assessment and Problem-Solving: The successful candidate must be able to assess clients’ needs, identify problems, and develop effective solutions. This involves critical thinking and the ability to analyze situations from various angles

  • Case Notes and File Management: The successful candidate must be able to maintain accurate and detailed case notes and documentation tracking clients’ progress, outcomes, and interactions.

  • Empathy and Compassion: The successful candidate will work with individuals who face barriers and challenging situations. Demonstrating empathy and compassion helps clients feel understood and supported, creating trust and a positive relationship.

  • Cultural Competence: The successful candidate will work with diverse populations. Cultural sensitivity and understanding of different backgrounds are vital to building trust and delivering effective service.

  • Collaboration: The successful candidate will work as part of a team with internal and external stakeholders. Collaborative skills are essential for ensuring a holistic approach and coordinating effective delivery of services.

  • Adaptability: The successful candidate must be flexible and able to deal with shifting circumstancesand evolving needs.
