Overview

Fairview Health Services has an exciting opportunity for a full time Laboratory Department Supervisor position at M Health Fairview University of Minnesota Medical Center-East Bank (https://mhealthfairview.org/locations/m-health-fairview-university-of-minnesota-medical-center---east-bank) in the Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory (MDL). The MDL is a local leader in pioneering genomic technologies for the diagnosis and management of both inherited disease and cancer. The supervisor will work collaboratively with the Laboratory leadership to achieve the vision for Fairview Laboratory services in Molecular Diagnostics.

The MDL serves a unique and diverse patient population with our hospital recognized as a national leader in areas like bone marrow transplantation. In addition, our hospital has also recently been established as a rare disease center of excellence. Our team of over 15 staff members perform highly specialized testing for inherited genetic disease, bone marrow engraftment, infectious disease, and malignant disease. Through our partnerships with clinical genetic counselors, molecular genetic pathologists, and bioinformaticists at University of Minnesota Health, we have developed and validated testing including comprehensive genomic tumor profiling and whole genome sequencing for patients with hereditary genetic diagnoses.

The supervisor is responsible for growth and development of staff, working closely with our colleagues to identify growth opportunities, and overseeing the validation and implementation of new genomic testing options. The ideal candidate will have experience with genomic technologies, molecular billing/reimbursement, and reporting.

Responsibilities Job Description

The Department Supervisor has direct responsibilities for the complete operation of a system laboratory. The responsibilities include oversight of operations including system regulatory compliance in their area of expertise, creation of system protocols and procedures, intradepartmental processes, departmental specific LIS build and processes, coordination and development of department specific quality programs, department specific implementation of new equipment, and ensuring provisioning of testing needs. The department supervisor is responsible for the supervision of employees in collaboration with laboratory managers/directors The department supervisor assures the provision of accurate testing which best meets the customer expectations in a cost-effective manner.

Responsible for operations of a system laboratory:

  • Partners with medical director to ensure testing needs of patients across the system are being met

  • Consults with operational leaders and clinicians across the system to address questions and problem solve testing from their area of specialty

  • Designs and improves workflows within department to meet needs of patients and clinicians across the system

  • Collaborates with laboratory departments across system on specimen requirements and transportation needs

  • Communicates testing changes and needs to stakeholders across the system

  • Ensures system laboratory is compliant with all regulatory requirements and provides evidence of compliance to stakeholders across system

  • Monitors key quality metrics and prepares quality data summaries and reports to meet Joint Commission, CAP and other regulatory requirements for system

Provides daily supervision of the laboratory or laboratory section:

  • Supervises employees in collaboration with laboratory manager/director and medical director.

  • Designs and directs workflow within department.

  • Provides leadership in team building and conflict management.

  • Promotes open and effective lines of communication within the work group, with other hospital/clinic departments, FV hospital entities, FV clinics, medical staff and external sources.

Assumes responsibility for the technical operations of the lab(s) or lab section(s):

  • Supervises overall operation and technical activities of the laboratory.

  • Ensures appropriate staffing models

  • Directs workflow in the daily operation of a laboratory section and provide direction and problem-solving skills for laboratory functions.

  • Oversees the performance of method development research, instrument correlation, and method validation.

  • Assures the performance of accurate testing.

  • Performs a wide variety of complex diagnostic and therapeutic testing.

  • Performs waived, moderate or high complexity testing as defined by CLIA ’88.

  • Oversees and/or performs laboratory information systems functions; ensures that change requests are communicated to LIS and that changes are implemented once made.

  • Participates in and /or facilitates system standardization teams.

Assumes responsibility for Human resource management:

  • Recruits and selects high-quality employees for employment

  • Responsible for monitoring the progress of the orientation and training of new and existing employees and students and ensures appropriate documentation is completed.

  • Provides formal feedback and goal setting as part of written evaluations and conferences.

  • Develops learning plans.

  • Re-evaluates staff progress toward goals during the course of the year.

Participates in planning and financial management for the lab or lab section:

  • Assists in planning for future developments including changes in staffing, workload, computer, space, equipment, and staff education.

  • Collaborates with the manager/director in the preparation of the annual operating and capital budgets.

  • Assists the manager/director in resolving budget discrepancies.

Evaluates testing results for accuracy and appropriate intervention.

  • Acts as a laboratory resource for the correlation of data, based on clinical knowledge, technical expertise, and other condition affecting test results.

  • Determines and supervises appropriate action to recheck abnormal, discrepant, or unexpected results.

  • Directly communicates abnormal and critical results to care giver and obtains information from caregivers to resolve reasons for incongruent results (physiologic or methodologic).

Supervises laboratory activities in Laboratory Quality Assurance, Performance Improvement and Laboratory Compliance Programs.

  • Responsible for the preparation of the laboratory for inspection by accrediting agencies and carries out activities to ensure compliance with regulatory and accreditation requirements.

  • Develops, implements, or contributes to the development and implementation of quality monitors and performance improvement activities.

  • Assumes overall responsibility for quality control; serves as resource for QC questions and problems.

Demonstrates ability to provide care or service adjusting approaches to reflect developmental level of population served.

  • Partners with patient/care-giver in care/decision making.

  • Communicates in a respectful manner.

  • Ensures a safe, secure environment.

  • Individualizes plan of care to meet patient needs.

  • Modifies clinical interventions based on population served.

  • Provides patient education based on an assessment of learning needs of patient/care-giver.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, physical, biological science, clinical laboratory science, or medical technology

Experience

  • Molecular Diagnostics-Four years of experience, one of which is in molecular pathology methods, under a qualified medical director

License/Certification/Registration

  • Applicant must possess appropriate HHS approved laboratory certification from ASCP or other certifying agency noted in parentheses:

  • Labs-Molecular Diagnostics-MLS, MT (AMT), MB, or SMB

Preferred

Experience

  • Three to Five years of experience in designated discipline or area of responsibility.
