Job Description

The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high-quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system’s 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.

The Bureau of Public Affairs and Communications manages all information given to the public (both digital and print), community outreach efforts, environmental education initiatives, special projects and events, government relations, and legislative affairs. It is responsible for creating and reviewing public-facing materials and information including press releases and responses to media inquiries, social media posts, graphic design, reports, marketing campaigns, DEP’s newsletter, and photo and video needs for all bureaus.

Responsibilities will include assisting the unit to conduct environmental education outreach to various industries in targeted locations across the City, helping to fulfill state and federally mandated community engagement work. The intern will also gain valuable experience and knowledge in all aspects of public engagement, city government, environmental regulations and interacting with the business community.

Under general supervision, the selected intern will be responsible for, but not limited to the following:

  • Assist the unit with community outreach tasks both clerical, administrative and in-person field visits.

  • Assist the unit with research, collecting information, data entry and creating Excel spreadsheets.

  • Answering telephones and responding to general inquiries, under guidance of the ECO unit.

  • Special Projects related to community outreach.

Qualifications

As of June of the Program year the prospective interne must be a student matriculated in a college or be a recent college graduate (winter/spring term of the Program year).

NOTE: Appointment to this title is only valid for the duration of the Program, June - August each year.
