BAE Systems Mechanical Engineer in Radford, Virginia

Job Description

BAE Systems is hiring a Mechanical Engineer in business development to lead design and construction programs to increase chemical production capacity at the Radford Army Ammunition Plant (RFAAP) in Radford, Virginia. The Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for determining the mechanical process requirements for conceptual projects while also guiding strategic, estimating, and project scope decisions as they pertain to how best to modernize the energetic production facilities at RFAAP.

What is this job like? Most days this role's responsibilities would involve coordinating with the program manager to determine what projects should be prioritized and what each project's technical requirements are. This process involves learning and understanding the current modernization strategy for the facility and reconciling that knowledge with the plant's current needs and making recommendations for projects that satisfy both the plant's future and current needs. This would involve reviewing current chemical production process steps and developing equipment or technology recommendations that inform an estimate that could be utilized to prepare a project proposal for submission to the United States Government to be considered for funding. This role possesses significant opportunity for growth since the energetics industry is a unique and specialized industry where the candidate can select their choice of career development (technical or management) should they desire to develop and hone their energetics expertise further.

Location/Schedule/Travel:

  • This role is based onsite in Radford, VA

  • The position has the flexibility to work hybrid/remote where you will work onsite 3 days a week and remote 2 days a week, project demands may require more or less onsite work weekly

  • This role works a 9/80 schedule where you will be off every other Friday

  • The position does not require significant travel,<10% which may entail a couple of times a year for industry events or corporate offsites

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for mechanical technical definition and requirements generation as well as successful completion of engineering tasks on assigned proposals

  • Create the technical development plan and overall engineering tasking for equipment considerations for various projects

  • Provide technical expertise for machine design and specification to suit production purposes

  • Coordinate the equipment aspects of the Capacity Expansion Modernization programs with the overall OSI (Ordnance Systems Inc.) team

  • Lead internal engineering or external suppliers in the development of drawings, statements of work, and specification packages

  • Help the PWS-2 team prepare budgetary and engineering estimates for project equipment

  • Assist the PM in the development of the budget

  • Assist PM in the approval of purchase requisitions and invoices

  • Performs other duties as required

Required Education, Experience, & Skills

  • Completed or Prospective Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience and education

  • Experience in Engineering design, development, and machine specification

  • Ability to use technical Engineering knowledge to make recommendations and influence projects

  • Ability to translate technical Engineering requirements into designs, diagrams, and proposals

  • Ability and willingness to learn the facilities processes, systems, equipment, and modernization strategy

  • Ability and willingness to learn the project management processes, systems, best practices, and requirements

  • Ability to effectively communicate and interface with various functional departments and customers

  • Ability to work within project requirements and industry standards to maintain compliance

  • Strong communications skills

  • Strong collaboration skills

  • Proficient in MS Office

Preferred Education, Experience, & Skills

  • Degree in Mechanical or Systems Engineering

  • Experience in Mechanical or Systems Engineering

  • Experience in Energetics production and related processes

  • Experience in Civil planning or Project/Construction estimating

  • Experience in Department of Defense (DoD) or demilitarization projects

  • Confidence with recommending equipment solutions during conceptual project development

Pay Information

Full-Time Salary Range: $56200 - $95500

However, individual salaries are determined by a variety of factors including, but not limited to: business considerations, local market conditions, and internal equity, as well as candidate qualifications, such as skills, education, and experience.
