Become a Senior Engineer 1 at Southern California Edison (SCE) and build a better tomorrow. In this role you’ll be part of the Digital Grid Services, Information Technology Department. As a Senior Telecom Engineer, you will be responsible for strategic planning, development and execution of engineering designs to enable reliable, affordable, and secure network connectivity between offices, communications sites, substations and grid operations facilities across 60,000 sq miles of telecom network service territory while leading the transition from TDM to IP technology. These transport networks provide connectivity for enterprise applications, customer call centers, data centers, and large office facilities as well as applications that support, monitor, and operate the power grid. You will analyze telecommunications requirements, produce high level project cost and workforce estimates, design telecommunications systems, initiate capital work orders, place orders for procurement of equipment, develop detailed installation job instructions and documentation, develop and handle schedules and track project progress. You will support project durations that range from a couple of months to multiple years with budgets ranging between $100K to $5M. You will serve as an authority for the organization in the respective field and will be asked to provide training and direction to other engineers.

A day in the life - Get ready to think big, work smart and shine bright!

  • Develop System Design - develop telecommunications system (e.g. fiber optic, lightwave and microwave transport systems, MPLS and DWDM platforms and data systems) designs and circuits, direct the design of facilities such as communications rooms and towers to meet project and system objectives considering a wide variety of complex factors such as environmental constraints, terrain, accessibility, availability of power and proximity to other SCE facilities. Evaluate large-scale systems and equipment, make strategic recommendations regarding refresh, deployment of new systems and network management methods that have significant financial and operational impacts. Provide recommendations and implement action plans to improve network reliability, performance and cost effectiveness. Provide information and recommendations on project decisions that require specialized knowledge and drive problem solving and issue resolution that have a significant impact to SCE. Lead development and execution of Fiber refresh and Copper Cable removal strategy. Lead and support strategy to migrate internal and leased TDM based assets to newer technologies.

  • Collaborate and Mentor – collaborate with Network Architects and other senior technical staff members to address technical issues and lead development and implementation of strategic engineering solutions. Participate in department planning and provide budget allocation recommendations to align with company and department goals and objectives. Serve as a senior staff domain expert in telecom and network systems and provide training and direction to other engineers. Direct the work of others or lead interdepartmental technical teams. Lead or support development of GRC testimony and act as an expert witness.

  • Analyze Project Requirements - act independently or as part of a team to analyze telecommunications requirements with respect to system capacity, system reliability and technical parameters, cost, schedule and scope. Initiate capital work orders, place orders for procurement of equipment and develop detailed installation job instructions and documentation to implement plans of service for projects, including elements such as required communications facilities, facility site location and required systems.

  • Perform Project Estimating - develop multiyear project cost and schedule estimates for projects, incorporating complete scope, cost and schedules. Publish cost estimates which are conveyed to internal groups and external customers, noting project assumptions, constraints, and disclaimers.

  • Develop and Update Standards, Guidelines, Documentation and Process - direct or perform assignments in specialized areas or in unique areas where engineering precedents are lacking and require thorough engineering expertise. Ensure that technical documentation related to assigned projects are produced and updated in accordance with established processes and standards, such as on-line systems, drawings, and job instructions. Act independently or as part of a team to lead the design of new standards, guidelines, processes or operational plans based on business strategy with a significant impact on operational and financial results. Recommend, lead and/or participate in evaluation and testing of a range of communication systems and equipment from external suppliers for integration into the SCE network, ensuring they meet all technical requirements.

  • Perform Project Management - develop and manage project scope, schedule, and budget. Monitor performance for the accomplishment of committed results and provide updates regarding project status, timeline and financial performance. Coordinate requirements and project delivery with internal partners and external teams in Transmission Telecom, Edison Carrier Solutions, Corporate Real Estate, T&D Engineering and MPO, T&D Substation Construction and Maintenance, Generation and Hydro. Coordinate and interface with external utilities, governmental agencies and external clients, as required by project scope.

The essentials

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or scientific, technical, math field.

  • Seven or more years of engineering experience

  • Experience with telecommunication systems (i.e. fiber optic, lightwave and microwave transport systems, MPLS and DWDM platforms and data systems)

The preferred

  • Masters Degree in Electrical or Telecom Engineering

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Broad knowledge of telecommunication and network systems and experience with regulations, guides, standards, codes, methods, practices, and advanced engineering principles necessary to perform very complex or unique assignments for a specific field, various installations, or services

  • Experience using automation and artificial intelligence tools

You should know

  • This position’s work mode is hybrid. The employee will report to an SCE facility for a set number of days with the option to work remotely on the remaining days. Unless otherwise noted, employees are required to reside in the state of California. Further details of this work mode will be discussed at the interview stage. The work mode can be changed based on business needs.

  • Position will require up to 10% traveling and being out in the field throughout the SCE service territory.

  • This position has been identified as a NERC/CIP impacted position - Prior to being hired, the successful candidate must pass a Personnel Risk Assessment (PRA) or Background Investigation. Once hired, the candidate must complete specified training prior to gaining un-escorted access to assigned work location and performing necessary job duties.

  • This position has an option for a 9/80 Alternate Work Schedule
