Nvidia Chemical and Materials Engineer – Immersion Technologist in Santa Clara, California

We are looking for a highly motivated Chemical and/or Materials Engineer to join this dynamic and innovative team to apply their expertise in chemistry and materials science and to help develop mechanical/thermal and electrical immersion cooled designs for NVIDIA’s next generation GPU and DGX products. What you’ll be doing: As a Chemical and Materials Engineer at NVIDIA, your primary responsibilities will be centered around developing immersion cooling system testing procedures, thresholds, and mitigation strategies to ensure the accurate selection of fluids and wetted materials for compatibility, thereby safeguarding the health and efficiency of NVIDIA’s server products. You will work collaboratively with multi-functional teams to deliver innovative solutions for our next-generation GPU and DGX server products. You will provide expert support to NVIDIA customers investigating immersion cooling! Your role will encompass the following key areas:

  • Cooling System Testing Procedures: Develop and implement meticulous testing procedures for evaluating the performance and compatibility of cooling fluids and wetted materials in data center environments. These procedures will be critical in ensuring the reliability and efficiency of our systems

  • Thresholds and Mitigation: Establish clear performance thresholds and develop mitigation strategies to address any issues identified during testing. Your expertise will be instrumental in proactively addressing potential challenges and minimizing system downtime.

  • F luids and Materials Compatibility : Conduct in-depth analyses and studies to ensure compatibility between selected immersion fluids and wetted materials, considering factors such as chemical leaching from components into the fluid, component degradation, fluid degradation, heat transfer efficiency, corrosion resistance, and environmental impact. You will assist design teams in selection of correct TIMS, gap pads, capacitors, and other components compatible with immersion fluid chemistry.

  • Laboratory Testing: Collaborate with internal teams to develop comprehensive specifications , scopes of work, and Request for Proposals (RFPs) for fluid and materials testing laboratories. This will involve defining the requirements and standards vital to support NVIDIA's global data center growth.

  • Vendor Management : Lead laboratory testing vendors in alignment with NVIDIA's technical and business requirements. You will act as a liaison between our organization and external partners to ensure that testing processes and results meet our high standards.

    What we need to see:

  • Minimum Bachelor's degree in Chemical and/or Material Science Engineering or equivalent experience

  • Knowledge of immersion cooling tank design and 2 phase immersion boiler plate / heat spreader plate design.

  • Strong expertise in chemistry and materials science, particularly as they relate to immersion cooling systems and data center environments.

  • Experience in developing and implementing testing procedures for fluids and materials, including with the materials/fluids interactions.

  • ​​8+ years' experience minimum

  • Knowledge of mechanical, thermal, and electrical designs, particularly in the context of servers, would be a significant asset.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with multi-functional teams.

  • A proactive and innovative approach, with a drive to solve complex challenges and contribute to the advancement of immersion cooling technology.

    Ways to stand out from the crowd:

  • Master’s or PhD. In Chemical / Material Science engineering.

  • In-depth understanding of chemistry in Single phase and 2 phase immersion cooling fluids.

  • Expertise in immersion cooling tank design and 2 phase immersion boiler plate / heat spreader plate design.

The base salary range is 152,000 USD - 287,500 USD. Your base salary will be determined based on your location, experience, and the pay of employees in similar positions.
